The majority of Denby pottery is made of stoneware, Denby White is made of porcelain and Denby China is made of bone china.
Stoneware
Stoneware is manufactured from highly plastic ball clay and give a ceramic article that is heavier and more opaque than porcelain or bone china. Stoneware bodies are non-porous and non-absorbent, i.e. vitreous. The colour of a stoneware body ranges from red to grey, depending on ball clay type and additional materials in the body recipe. Stoneware is a strong, robust ceramic capable of withstanding oven use and rough handling.
Porcelain
Porcelain is a white, semi-translucent ceramic body that is hard and non-porous. It is manufactured using kaolin (also known as china clay), petuntse and feldspar. Kaolin is a white coloured, pure clay with a high melting temperature that imparts the physical and visual properties to the body. Porcelain is resistant to temperature change and so is generally oven safe and is fairly robust in use.
Bone China
Stronger than porcelain and easier to manufacture. Its white, translucent appearance is created by adding bone ash to the ingredients for hard-paste porcelain. The bone ash serves to whiten and slightly strengthen the porcelain, while reducing the necessary firing temperature by about 150 - 200 degrees C.
